Graduate students Tyler Cumby and Michele Olsen study the interactions of bosons and fermions

Our group studies the interactions of bosons and fermions in a quantum two-species degenerate gas. We have measured the scattering length between 40K and 87Rb atoms by studying their interactions and collision behavior. In 2004, we observed the first heteronuclear Feshbach resonances between 40K and 87Rb atoms.

We are currently working on making KRb molecules by sweeping across a Feshbach resonance between the K and Rb atoms in conditions close to quantum degeneracy. We will also explore what happens when we use the Feshbach resonances to vary the scattering lengths between strongly interacting and strongly repulsive.
