| My research in theoretical astrophysics focuses on studies of the formation of supermassive black holes and the physics of gamma-ray bursts. I am currently working on developing a model for the formation of black holes at high redshift via direct collapse, and on studies of the plasma conditions in the hyperaccreting disks around stellar mass black holes that are believed to occur during mergers of compact objects or collapse of massive star cores. As this last is concerned, I am now interested in the role of microphysical dissipation and non-ideal MHD effects in affecting global properties of discs, such as magnetisation and time variability. Highlights of my prior work include the introduction of the "structured jet" model for interpreting GRB jet energetics and afterglow lightcurves, and development of a theory for the evolution of neutron-rich fireballs in gamma-ray bursts. |
