Graduate StudentsGraduate education is an integral part of JILA. The goal of graduate training at JILA is to impart to the student the knowledge, skills, confidence, and independence necessary to be effective in a wide variety of challenging positions. Graduate students first enroll in participating departments at the University of Colorado and then select research topics with faculty members in JILA; to facilitate this process, close coordination exists between graduate admissions and JILA scientists. Participating CU departments include Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS). Upon graduation, students receive their degree from one of these departments. Graduate students in any field of physical science who are also interested in optics have the opportunity to apply to The Optical Science and Engineering Program (OSEP), an innovative graduate training program designed to meet the growing demand for individuals who have a thorough familiarity with optics in addition to graduate training in Chemistry, Physics, or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Direct inquiries about research opportunities to the appropriate senior scientist; names appear in the JILA Faculty section found on the JILA home page. You can also download an intermediate-resolution copy of our brochure (2M). Applications:
Address inquiries about graduate program admission, requirements, and curricula to the chair of the department of interest (i.e., Chair, Name of department, University of Colorado, 440 UCB, Boulder, CO 80309). Benefits to being a graduate student at JILA are many. Students work in a stimulating, collaborative environment with prominent scientists both from JILA and from around the world. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with industrial scientists through the Industry at JILA Program. This balance of academic and industrial experience helps in guiding later career decisions. And finally, students work at world-class facilities, and can participate in training courses in electronics, electron microscopy, computing, machining, technical writing, and public speaking offered by JILA staff. JILA graduate students have been successful in various areas of employment, encompassing positions at universities and colleges, in industry, and at government laboratories.
