Visiting Fellows
This program provides support for visits to JILA by distinguished scientists. Two types of visits will be considered: (1) Short term visitors, who come to JILA for up to 4 weeks with a minimum stay of 1 week, and (2) longer term visitors, who come for up to one year, with a minimum stay of 6 weeks.
Short term visitors
- Application. A candidate for this program should submit a curriculum vita and a short description of the proposed collaboration with one of the research programs of the Institute. The application normally would be preceded by informal discussions with one or more Fellows of the Institute.
- Stipend. Each visitor will receive reimbursement for the cost of round-trip transportation and an additional allowance for local expenses and per diem. No additional support will be provided for persons accompanying the visitor.
- Deadlines. Applications for this program will be considered on a quarterly basis. The deadlines for the quarterly evaluations are 31 January, 30 April, 31 July, and 31 October of each year. An applicant may propose a visit up to one year in the future.
- Evaluation Criteria. Each applicant will be evaluated using criteria that include the quality of the applicant's research program, the overlap of that research program with the program of the Institute, and the availability of funds.
Longer term visitors
- Application. Each prospective visitor should submit a research plan describing what the visitor hopes to accomplish during the visit, what special resources or facilities would be needed, and the value that the visit would provide to the JILA research programs. In addition, the application must include 3 letters of reference, the applicant's curriculum vita, and a letter of support from one of the JILA Fellows, confirming that the resources and facilities are available and describing the benefit of the visit to the research work of the Institute.
- Stipend. Each visitor will receive a stipend that includes an allowance for living expenses. The stipend will be approximately $4,000 per month. In addition, the visitor will receive reimbursement for the cost of round-trip transportation based on the cost of economy airfare to and from the visitor's home institution. No additional support will be provided for the travel expenses of persons accompanying the visitor.
- Deadline. Applications for visits starting any time during the nominal 2000–2010 academic year should be received by 1 November 2008. The Fellows will endeavor to announce the awards by 15 January 2009.

Visiting Scientists Office (A235)
Cheryl Glenn manages the Visiting Scientists Office. She routinely assists visitors with visas and in locating housing, banks, shopping malls, schools, and recreation facilities. Cheryl has Social Security forms and maps of the CU Boulder campus, City of Boulder, and State of Colorado. She also has a Boulder-area hiking map, a Denver map, and Colorado tourist information that she’s willing to lend out on a short-term basis. Cheryl is available to help answer questions about settling in to the Boulder community. She can also help visitors discover online information on a variety of topics, including new telephone service or obtaining a Driver’s License.
