JILA technical support services are offered exclusively to JILA Fellows and Members and their groups. These services support a broad range of research and educational goals. The close interaction between JILA's technical staff and research scientists, visitors, and students is a hallmark of the Institute.
The computing staff manages UNIX, Novell, and other servers, and supports a local area network of distributed workstations, PCs, terminals, and printers. The staff also provides consultations, training courses, and repair assistance. In addition, the staff supports network connections from offices, laboratories, and home computers to international computer networks and national supercomputer centers.
The electronics shop staff provides design, fabrication, and repair of specialized laboratory electronics, as well as consultation and training courses in electronics principles and techniques. The staff also maintains a pool of electronic test equipment that can be borrowed, and manages an electronics parts storeroom.
JILA's instrument shop staff designs and fabricates state-of-the-art experimental apparatuses and offers training courses in the use of shop equipment. The staff also provides expert fabrication and services for electron microscopy and optical coating. The W. M. Keck Optical Measurement Laboratory, a research and educational facility funded by the Keck Foundation, provides optical-measurement and optical-characterization instruments and expands JILA's optical- and nano-fabrication facilities.
The scientific reports office is responsible for outreach communications, including the JILA brochure and quarterly newsletters; websites for both JILA and the JILA AMO Center for Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics; digital media production; support for Fellows' web pages; scientific manuscript editing; announcement of JILA seminars; assistance with presentation materials; classes in scientific writing; general technical support with electronic submission and file conversions; maintenance of Fellows' CVs; reprint ordering and distribution; archiving of manuscripts and reports, and word processing.
The supply office staff is responsible for purchasing, accounts payable, shipping, freight charges, building services, laboratory setup and break down, property, general scientific and office supplies, and close-in parking passes. Staff members work to make these services run smoothly for researchers, staff, and students.
