Computing Services

The JILA Computing Services staff manages central servers and cluster computers; supports a local area network of distributed workstations, PCs, Macs, terminals, and printers; and installs and maintains network connections from offices and labs to other campus systems, the Internet, and national supercomputer centers.

Central Services

Computing staff is able to offer personalized services for JILA members because it maintains a JILA web server, email server, file storage and backup system. This hardware allows the group to personalize services for individual needs.

Distributed Services

Computing staff supports Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs and workstations in labs and offices as well as operating JILA-based servers. Staff members work directly with JILA researchers to design, order, and install any computing equipment they might need.

General Use Equipment

Computing staff maintains a computer lab with Windows and Mac systems as well as high-speed public printers, scanners, and a professional quality poster printer. It also provides a desktop 3D printer for rapid prototyping and the creation of physical models of advanced theoretical concepts.


Computing staff members support the installation, licensing, and use of software packages for general desktop use, laboratory experimentaion, and theoretical calculations. Software packages available to JILA members include LabView, IDL, Mathematica, Matlab, Comsol, the Intel Compiler Suite, Microsoft Office, the Adobe Creative Suite, and many others.

High Performance Computing

Computing staff members works with JILA researchers to design, implement, and run two small computational clusters. These clusters are specifically designed to provide a good working environment for certain Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Modeling software packages that are not well suited to run on most larger supercomputers. JILA's computing staff also works closely with the University of Colorado's Research Computing Group to assist JILA members in using the CU supercomputer.
