The prospects for coherent sources at very
short wavelengths - even possibly in the hard-x-ray
region of the spectrum - have brightened with the ability
to manipulate electron dynamics on attosecond time scales.
Nature Physics 3, 270 (2007); LFW, May 2007
The attosecond recollision of an
electron plucked from a molecule during
the process of high harmonic generation can be
used as a very sensitive probe of intramolecular dynamics.

Generating high harmonics from ions
in a capillary discharge plasma waveguide.
PRL 96, 203001 (2006); OPN, Dec. 2006
Our group developed the first cryogenically-cooled Ti:sapphire amplifier designs. Cryo-cooling of the crystal extends high-power ultrafast pulses to very high repetition rates, for application experiments in imaging and materials and chemical spectroscopy.
