Event Details & Abstract:

Recent years have seen dramatic changes in our understanding of protoplanetary disc dynamics. Discs are not symmetrical as we thought they were. Instead, we find large scale patterns such as rings, crescent-like structures and spiral waves. The challenge is now to explain these features, which could be the signature of embedded planets or subtle fluid dynamical effects. In this seminar, I will discuss plausible dynamical mechanisms potentially creating these patterns. The role played by MHD effects and instabilities in the low ionisation regime will also be demonstrated.

Reception at 2:45 pm.
