Discs are not symmetrical as we thought they were. Instead, we find large scale patterns such as rings, crescent-like structures and spiral waves. The challenge is now to explain these features, which could be the signature of embedded planets or subtle fluid dynamical effects. In this seminar, I will discuss plausible dynamical mechanisms potentially creating these patterns. The role played by MHD effects and instabilities in the low ionisation regime will also be demonstrated. Reception at 2:45 pm.
