But in the deep subwavelength regime, all photonic transport effects, including Anderson localization, become trivialized and effective medium theory is commonly expected to take over. This talk will present a study of extreme subwavelength multilayer structures – dielectric layer stacks with an average layer thickness of lambda/40 (experimentally) or lambda/1000 (theoretically). Rather than being a weak effect, localization in this regime dominates transport completely. Moreover, thickening a single layer inside the structure by 2nm is experimentally shown to have an effect on the visible light.
