Event Details & Abstract: 

The study of the properties of Quantum Chromodynamics by Monte Carlo simulations, called Lattice QCD, has been highly successful in the regime where matter and anti-matter densities are equal. When they are not, the notorious "sign problem" occurs, and standard Monte Carlo sampling cannot be applied.
I review the nature of the "sign problem", the importance of addressing it, and offer some views on current efforts to circumvent it.
