In doing so it is important to think beyond the current best-case effort and have an eye to future possibilities. The present day approach appears to be the natural extension of the existing definition: choose a single long-lived transition that is relatively immune from external perturbations. The frequency comb technology has moved this into the optical domain but the basic approach is the same. This can lead to compromises between competing properties of the atom. Using Lutetium as an example, we will discuss why this approach may not necessarily be the most suitable.
