Event Details & Abstract:

Conventional Superconductivity and Ferromagnetic order are two competing groundstates. However at the interface between a ferromagnetic and superconducting material on a short lengthscale (typically 10-100 nm) they coexist originating new  quantum matter. Electron transport in nanoscale devices and mesoscopic circuits allow to address the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of such artificial electron matter which rapidly vanishes in bulk. After reviewing some key results where the exchange interaction is shown to modify the superconducting wavefunction generating singlet  pi-wave or triplet odd-frequency superconductivity, I shall mainly focus on the dynamics of itinerant spins in presence of Cooper pairs. In particular, I shall present two recent experiments in which we observed: 1) resonant dynamical coupling between spin and (superconducting) phase dynamics and 2) spin-charge separation in mesoscopic Aluminium.
