Pure optical imaging approaches, such as diffuse optical tomography, are ultimately limited in resolution due to tissue scattering. Photoacoustic tomography and acousto-optic imaging are two hybrid imaging modalities that exploit the coupling and interaction between ultrasound and light to overcome scattering. These techniques combine the spectroscopic capability and high contrast of optical imaging with the spatial resolution of ultrasound imaging. In this presentation, the background and theory of acousto-optic imaging will be discussed. Applications of acousto-optic imaging for quantitative tissue characterization and real-timemonitoring of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy will be presented. In addition, a new technique for contrast enhanced photoacoustic imaging and tissue therapy, referred to asphotoacoustic cavitation, will be described. Here, the laser generation of vapor bubbles aroundplasmonic nanoparticles is enhanced through the application of an ultrasound field. The growth and collapse of these bubbles leads to local mechanical disruption and strong acoustic emission, and can potentially be used to induce and monitor (through photoacoustic imaging) targeted therapy.
