Event Details & Abstract: 

The numerical propagation of coherent light waves through free space is a critical component of many problems in computational optics. The difficulty in this problem is that if propagating long distances (as measured in wavelengths), the kernel becomes highly oscillatory. Current numerical methods for applying this kernel are inaccurate and, in particular, do not have a mechanism for controlling the error. In this talk, I will discuss our progress towards constructing an accurate algorithm where the cost of applying the kernel is independent of the propagation distance.
