Graduate Students

Graduate education is an integral part of JILA. Students work in a stimulating, collaborative environment with researchers from JILA and visitors from around the world. Students work in world-class facilities and have the option to participate in training courses in electronics, electron microscopy, computing, machining, and scientific writing and presentations. JILA Ph.D. students have won prestigious awards and postdoctoral fellowships, and have obtained positions in academia, government & private research organizations, and industry.

JILA faculty members work hard to ensure that every student acquires the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to succeed in a variety of challenging positions. To help students have a good experience at JILA, the Institute provides volunteer counselors. Graduate student benefits are determined by the graduate school.

Prospective JILA graduate students should apply to specific departments at the University of Colorado. Once accepted, graduate students can then select research topics with JILA faculty members. Upon graduation, students received their degree from the CU department in which they are enrolled. Participating CU departments include (click to link to department home page or application).

Other CU schools and services of interest to prospective graduate students include:

Graduate students who are interested in optics may apply to The Optical Science and Engineering Program (OSEP), an innovative graduate training program designed to meet a growing demand for individuals who thoroughly understand optics in addition to having graduate training in Chemistry, Physics, or Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Awards

The Lehnert Group.

Each year, graduate students and postdoctoral research associates at JILA receive important recognition for their work. For instance, every year, the American Physical Society's Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (DAMOP) gives an award for a particularly distinguished dissertation. In the past six years, two former JILA graduate students and a postdoctoral research associated have won the award and two additional students have been finalists for this prestigious award. JILA postdoctoral research associates are also well represented among each year's winners of the coveted National Research Council postdoctoral fellowships.
