JILA offers individual users and groups the opportunity to conveniently create their own World Wide Web (WWW) pages that can be accessed through the main JILA webserver. This service is designed to aid in the dissemination of scientific and academic information to a wide audience through the WWW.
Initial setup
Any user with an account on jilau1 may run a program called "mkhomepage",
which will create a directory called "public_html" in his/her home
directory. Any pages in this public_html directory can be accessed via
the WWW at
Because WWW pages on a JILA server provide a reflection of JILA as a whole to the general public, it is very important that all users are aware of JILA's WWW guidelines when posting information on their individual pages. Additionally, users are encouraged to have the Scientific Reports Office check the content of their pages before posting.
Users can check the access statistics of their web pages via monthly reports or a customizable form.
Getting More Help with WWW Pages.
In general, WWW pages served out through the HyperText Transfer Protocol
(HTTP) are written in HyperText Markup Language (HTML.) HTML consists of
formatting tags (similar to those in LaTeX) that control the appearance
of the page when it is accessed through a browser.
JILA's Webmaster, Jeff Fal, is available for consulting on all aspects of creating WWW pages. Any technical or administrative support groups who wish to develop pages are particularly encouraged to talk to Jeff before starting.
The JILA computing support staff also maintain a library containing a number of books on WWW development. Please stop by S222 if you would like to borrow a book.
