Usage guidelines and other info

Backups
All of the filesystems on jilau1 except for /jila (J: drive) are backed up to tape each night. Many filesystems on distributed systems get tape backups as well. Email unix@jila.colorado.edu if you have any questions about whether a given disk is backed up. The nightly backups are saved for 28 days; less-frequent snapshot backups are saved for a year. Thus, if you need a file restored, please contact unix@jila as soon as possible.

When requesting data recovery from tape, please include the full path to the missing files or directories, the date the data was lost, and the last date that the data had changed before being lost. The more information you can provide, the quicker we can restore your files. Note that not all files can be recovered: a file must be on disk during the nightly backups in order to be archived, and occasionally a network or other hardware problem causes a given backup to fail. Assuming that all goes well, we can normally restore from tape within one business day.

It's always a good idea to save really critical data on two separate computers, or to make your own copies on a CD or DVD.

Downtimes
Whenever possible, the computing staff will announce outage schedules for servers and networks several days in advance. Announcements may appear in the JILA Computing News emails, or in the Message of the Day that is displayed when logging into jilau1 or other workstations. If you find that a computer or service is unavailable or not working as expected, please contact a member of the computing group as soon as possible.

Charges
The JILA computing group recovers some of its costs via charges for disk usage, tape backups, network connections, etc. The current charge schedule is available here.

Computing community
JILA's computing infrastructure is a shared resource; keeping the following guidelines in mind will help ensure that the whole community gets good performance and availability from our computing equipment.
